![]() Windows is just on top and will generally default to a generic driver if something is missing or something new is added. Motherboards via bios take control of the actual hardware connected to it. Many thanks for the answer.reason why i was considering ''cloning the SSD to use on another machine'' is just in case my current desktop's motherboard were to malfunction. I say this because if your system is running well and everything is up to date then a simple clone means no need to reinstall anything on your present PC. if you move the drive to a new PC then you only have to use the windows system under registration f the software to indicate upgraded hardware as MS is pretty lenient with the move so long as the one license you have is a genuine one.Ĭloning is generally very fast with SSDs so I would reccomend you use the 1st option and save the second option for if and when needed. If you then take the ssd out and place in another pc you will still have that issue if you have upgraded for example. Windows itself will simply use generic drivers so you will most likely need to check your hardware and reinstall specific drivers for your GPU chipset etc. The only real issue you face is once the systems - PCs you are running only one can use the license associated with the drive. ![]() Many thanks for taking the time and effort for the reply.so if i were to clone the boot drive using '' to use on another machine (clone with bootable OS)''.i can still use it with my current PC since Windows10 will sort out the drivers issue + the flexibility of using the clone SSD with a new PC ? The beauty of cloning for another PC is that you migrate all your personal apps and software installations to a new PC without having to reinstall them all.plus your prefs and settings should also remain untouched and ready to roll Once you have booted the PC you generally run any driver updates that might be required anyways so no matter which option you choose they will work but the amount of work after successfully booting to the desktop could be diffierent. Windows itself on boot will often sort these issues out and update as needed. Pretty much the same way in which the regular old fashioned windows on a disk would work in any PC so the windows OS for example will have plenty of drivers specifc for the PC it is running upon.Ī clone with generic drivers is what one would need for an alternative PC as the motherboard the graphics card the cpu etc etc is undefined. The choice refers mainly to hardware specific items.
